New Tangrams app for iPhone and iPad

Tangrams is an old favourite puzzle, originating in China several hundred years ago but becoming popular in Europe in the 1800s.

The aim is to use the seven pieces formed by cutting up a square to create other interesting shapes. Some of these can be quite challenging!

At one level it is an intriguing puzzle, but it also encourages and develops spatial awareness. This version has no gimmicks but plenty of options. You can alter the speed at which pieces move and control the movement by using your fingers (but if you have difficulty you can operate the puzzle completely by using buttons). If you wish, you can change the colours of the pieces and/or the background.

There are many built-in puzzles for you to solve, in various categories, but you can also play freehand and create your own patterns. These can then be saved alongside the inbuilt ones.

You can play against the clock, and record your fastest times.

When attempting any saved puzzle you can get hints towards a solution. And if you are really stuck the Solve button can do it for you!

Included in the app is a list of links to other resources - books and websites - developed by the Tangram community!
